In Memory of Grandma
Ten things that I have learnt from my grandma's memorial service:
1) The monks chanting drove me crazy. Those songs are truly one of a kind. More unique than those tribe music recorded by those know-it-all musicians from overseas.
2) I had never inhaled so much second-hand smoke in my life thanks to all those burning incense and candles.
3) My grandma had never spanked me even once in my life. I was her favourite grandchild.
4) When my uncle sent my grandma to the hospital for medical treatment a fortnight ago, she called out to my cousin and asked him not to be worried as she will be back in a day or two. She thought she was going to be fine again.
5) When she was still around, no one bothered to spend time with her. (She nagged and mumbled a lot.) Now that she's gone, almost everyone came back. Never been so many people gathered under one roof before, even during the Chinese New Year. Being there for her when she was still alive is different from being there when she was no longer here.
6) There is no point to cry/wail/weep when she can no longer hear you. I didn't drop a tear. Not that I'm heartless or a cold-hearted person. But because I had spent every single precious moment with her while she was still alive, those cherished memories will last with me for my whole lifetime.
7) Grandma looked so peaceful inside the coffin. It gave me the urge to wake her up from the deep sleep. It is difficult to accept the fact that she's gone. To a better place. Not on earth. Anymore.
8) The last conversation that I had with my grandma while she was still conscious (on the hospital bed) was that she noticed my shiny wrist watch and she jokingly asked if it was given to me by one of my bfSss. I said no and I told her it was bought long-long time ago. I guessed grandma just wanted to find out whether her granddaughter is being taken good care of by a good man whom she will grow old with.
9) I have learnt to love and appreciate the people around me even more, especially when they are still living and breathing. Family Time = Quality Time.
10) There is no amount of money that can ever buy you love, time and life.
