起痰

Dear class,

We are going to learn two new words today. And they are:

1. 起 qǐ /to rise/to raise/to get up/ AND
2. 痰 tán /phlegm/spit/spittle

When the two words are combined together, it means the phlegm is forming inside your nose and throat.

The Mandarin pronunciation for 起痰 is qǐ tán
And the Cantonese pronunciation for 起痰 is "hei tam".

One day in MSN, I have learnt a new definition for "hei tam". Let me share it with you here...

Me: Good?! People "hei tam" because they have disease or they are not feeling well, you see me and you said you wanna "hei tam", and that implies you see me you feel sick jor.
He: This "hei tam" is not because of disease one.
Me: Then what?
He: In cantonese, "hei tam" is something like heart melted.
Me: Your heart has already melted for your gf. Where can melt the second time one?
He: Yeah la... Where got people see their own gf will "hei tam" one??? Right? Gf is "hei tam" before, then go after, then become gf.
Me: So complicated, if no more "hei tam" then how?
He: to whom?
Me: Your gfSsss laa!
He: hahaaa... Where got so many? I got one only kay...
Me: No more "hei tam" = spit jor (split jor)?
He: No la. "Hei tam" means, can see but can't touch. Can touch one won't make me "hei tam"!
